Why, in the final cataclysmic setup, is it Vidar and not Thor who survives, representing the salvific principle, the one who ends the overwhelming darkness of Fenrir by thrusting his sword into his heart?
Thor is the god of the realm of men, the superman, the ubermensch. In current cultural terms, in masculinist discourse, one would speak of an alpha male. The alpha is the one who succeeds, distinguishing himself among men as a natural leader, due to his above-average vitality or genius. But this is precisely his weakness: he defines himself in relation to the world of men and the system. Without an aristocratic warrior caste, alpha men – defined by success – will focus their efforts on economic success to distinguish themselves and exist.
This is why Thor is bogged down in his fight against the great Serpent, Jormungand, and comes out mortally affected by its venom. Because in the end, one cannot win in a game where the rules are set by the enemy. It is even said that it is because of this absorbing battle that Thor cannot come to aid Wotan (Gyl. 51).
Using the terms of masculinist currents: if Thor is the « alpha » man, Vidar, on the other hand, is the « sigma » man, the ultimate independent-minded individual, who does not hesitate to embrace solitude and seclusion if that is the price of his spiritual integrity… He thus distinguishes himself by his spirit. Not technical thought or ingenuity, but Spirit. Since he fights Fenrir just like his father Wotan, he is at least on the same level as them, that of the conception of the world, the definition of the System itself, i.e., the Spiritual level.
Alphas, though combative and superior to the average man, are accustomed to social recognition, success, which pushes them to compromise in this corrupt system. They are then contaminated by the capitalist and individualist venom of Jormungand (focusing only on one’s close circle is a form of individualism).
Thor will fight to the end, but the warrior aristocracy associated with him has already disappeared. Social classes embodying Thor’s qualities (dynamism, innovation) will disappear at Ragnarök or be poisoned by Jormungand. Of Thor, only his sons will remain, Magni and Moði – Strength and Energy/Courage – who will be among the communal forces leading to the return of Balder, the Light for our people.
Vidar the sigma will be the key piece, the hinge between the old and the new system. The kind of man who thinks outside the box, who prioritizes his deep convictions over any social convention, against all reason, sometimes to the detriment of temporary success. The kind of man capable of generating an entirely new world through the power of the spirit.
