In a context of colonization and oppression, the importance of Gods and myths for our oppressed people is more necessary than ever because they are:
Beacons of Identity and Resistance: Far from being mere mythological figures, our ethnic deities rise as beacons of cultural and spiritual identity, becoming true symbols of resistance against the invader. They represent a precious heritage that escapes the colonizer’s attempts at erasure and keeps the flame of our ethnic integrity alive.
Pillars of Strength and Solace: In the face of adversity, humiliation, and suffering, deities are boundless sources of comfort and courage. They strengthen individuals’ faith by reminding them that they are not alone in their struggle, that higher powers support them.
Catalysts of Solidarity: Our deities transcend their spiritual role to become true catalysts of social cohesion. They gather people around a common cause, thus reinforcing the sense of solidarity and community unity.
Instruments of Liberation: Deities are not mere objects of veneration; they become instruments of liberation. Spiritual and religious leaders can invoke them to organize resistance and mobilize the masses against oppression.
Guardians of Cultural Resilience: Finally, our spiritual beliefs and the rituals associated with our deities are guardians of cultural resilience. Despite republican colonial pressure, they allow the people to perpetuate our traditions, customs, and cultural heritage.
It is essential, therefore, to recognize and honor the crucial role of deities in the resistance and survival of our colonized people. These sacred figures are invaluable allies in the struggle for self-determination, freedom, the preservation of our people’s existence, and the future of our children.
